Working remotely using winswitch

The following short guide how to use winswitch is a copy of an email by Thomas Dauser. Since winswitch uses XPRA internally, you might use a combination of XPRA and SSH as well to work remotely.

Winswitch can be simply installed on any system (Linux, Mac, Windows). Please follow the instructions on their webapge: [[1]]
The application is then best started from the graphical launcher.

Instructions for connecting:

1) Just go to the drop-down menu and select "new connection". Add the infos for your user and host you want to connect to (e.g., your machine or simply leo.sternwarte.uni-erlangen.de).

2) When you are connected, you are able to start an "Application" and a "Desktop". Now here comes the major difference:

We do not support a full desktop connection any more!

Instead, what you do, you choose from the drop-down menu: "Start Application → System → XTerm"

3) A small window opens. You can start any remote graphical application from this window on the host you are connected to.

Problems and helpful Notes

  • The local server which gets installed with winswitch on your laptop might cause problems (e.g., a strange screen lock behaviour). You should be able to deactivate and still connect to the Remeis cluster.
