Dr. Javier Garcia: Humboldt-Fellow studying Black Holes

Credit: J. Garcia

Black holes are attractive — not only with respect to the matter in their surroundings but also to scientists worldwide. One of these scientists is Dr. Javier Garcia, a Humboldt Fellow who works at the Dr. Karl Remeis-Observatory since March 2017.

Dr. Garcia simulates the interaction of gas and radiation in the very hot vicinity of black holes. In collaboration with scientists at the Dr. Karl Remeis-Observatory, he developed a state-of-the-art model for X-ray radiation around black holes.

About

Dr. Javier Garcia studied physics at the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas and finished his PhD at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Currently, Dr. Garcia works as a NuSTAR team member at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and as a Visiting Research Associate at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. He will stay at the observatory until the end of May, 2017, and will return for research visits anually.
